October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, so we’d like to acknowledge our health system partners who go the extra mile to comfort breast cancer patients during treatment.
Patients facing a breast cancer diagnosis also face a challenging course of treatment, whether surgery or chemotherapy is advised. Surgery can be a difficult decision. Chemotherapy brings unique challenges, as patients must plan repeat visits to an outpatient facility for infusions. Patients with breast cancer need extra comfort at every opportunity, to let them know that their clinical team sees them as individuals, not just a diagnosis.
Our partner health systems keep the patient perspective at the center of their work in experience design. We’re proud to work with them to create better patient experiences by providing amenity kits that comfort women and send a message of support. Our ability to customize the content of the kits means that special touches are delivered to patients. We include items that anticipate patient needs, like lip balm for oral discomfort from medications, puzzle books to help pass the time in the infusion chair, or warm slippers and blankets with breast cancer awareness colors to invite nods of solidarity and messages of hope from others. We have the ability to include print materials in these kits, tying amenities into a navigator or patient education program.
We know that these items can become a small but tangible representation of the clinical skill and human kindness that your staff offers to each patient. We’re always ready to share our lessons-learned about the unique needs of patients with breast cancer and how we can all show that we care.
